Sustainable Heating: What’s Possible?

How can we heat the Central Market Hall in Amsterdam in the most sustainable way possible? It's a building with a large surface area and lots of glass, where it's cold in winter and hot in summer.

To find an answer to that question, different types of heating are being tested. One of them is ceiling heating, a system consisting of “polypropylene capillary climate mats.” The mats are expected to have a short response time and provide high user comfort, and they are also 100% recyclable. Since the water is heated and cooled using a heat pump, it is energy-efficient as well.

The transfer of heating and cooling energy to the people in the space primarily occurs through radiation, which aligns with the natural conditions in the human body’s heat regulation. Another advantage is that there is no draft or dust circulation.

The test will determine whether ceiling heating provides sufficient comfort and also assess its power consumption. To be continued!
