CAFE 749 – ORKATER

The first festive performance leading up to the 750th anniversary of Amsterdam will be staged at the Central Market Hall.

Orkater, an Amsterdam-based company renowned for its theater productions infused with music in its DNA, will present this performance.

This year, Amsterdam celebrates its 750th anniversary, and to commemorate it, the loyal clientele of neighborhood café 749 is working on a special performance. Everyone is welcome to participate. The performance highlights Amsterdam; a city that has struggled with space constraints for centuries. The fierce battle for every square meter of land, however, seems to be becoming more and more a reality for the regulars. Even the beloved brown café, where everyone is always welcome for parties, singing, celebrating, and mourning, is at risk of disappearing. Unless regulars and newcomers join forces and collectively stand up for the preservation of their place…

Orkater will perform the show “Café 749,” a musical tribute to the city, at the Centrale Markthal This performance (open here the link to the teaser) also serves as a tribute to the Amsterdam former alderman De Miranda, who advocated for affordable housing for all Amsterdammers. For this location-based performance, Orkater collaborates with the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra, Meervaart, Markt Centraal (in the Central Market Hall), and an extensive cast of actors, musicians, and interns from theater schools, along with Amsterdammers.

Please note: The Central Market Hall is only accessible by the Markt Centraal Express, departing from the gate of the Food Center Amsterdam at Jan van Galenstraat 6.

The Central Market Hall is wheelchair accessible and has an accessible toilet in the lobby. Unfortunately, the train is not wheelchair accessible. If you are coming with a wheelchair, please let us know in advance so that we can register you with the gatekeeper of the Food Center Amsterdam.

Premiere: April 11, ’24
Performance dates: April 5 to May 4, ’24
Location: Central Market Hall, Jan van Galenstraat 6, Amsterdam West
In collaboration with the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra and Meervaart.
Until February 12, there is a special early bird discount for tickets (€27.50).
