OPEN MONUMENTS DAY
The underground city
CALL: Past in the Centrale Markthal
On Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 September, 50 monuments in Amsterdam will open their doors to the public, including the Centrale Markthal. During this event, even more special locations that are normally closed will be open, in short, worth getting to know the city better during this weekend.
‘The Underground City’
During the 38th edition of Open Monumentendag Amsterdam, we will dive into ‘The Underground City’. We literally take you underground: through cellars, tunnels and bunkers and past archaeological finds. Discover hidden places above ground, such as hidden churches, and listen to the stories of contrary Amsterdammers of all shapes and sizes. From squatters, graffiti artists and other non-conformists. Join us and be surprised by the hidden sides of the city.
During this weekend, part of the Centrale Markthal cellars (yes, they exist) will be made accessible. At the invitation of Amsterdam municipality, Dutch Graffiti Library will also open its doors to the general public for the first time that weekend.
This former Centrale Markthal from 1934 is one of the largest covered spaces in the city. Underground stretches a labyrinth of tiled corridors and storage areas that can be closed with steel doors. Traces of refrigeration equipment and underground conveyors for vegetables and other chilled goods can still be seen in many places. Join us on guided tours of both the underground and above-ground parts of this beautiful national monument.
