‘buro bordo,’ by Judith Öfner and Jessica Voorwinde, has been a tenant of the Central Market Hall since August 2022.

Despite its size, the Central Market Hall is a hidden gem of Amsterdam. “To suddenly be able to pioneer here is amazing. We have a strong affinity for architecture, with Jessica even being an architectural historian, and working in such a beautiful building is fantastic.”

‘buro bordo’ is an Amsterdam-based project studio for art and design and is involved both in content and organization in projects such as the Dutch Design Week, the Venice Biennale (Dutch Pavilion), Sandberg Institute, Eye Filmmuseum, Mondriaan Fonds, Het HEM, and more. In 2020, buro bordo co-initiated and set up the Circular Department Store, which won a Dutch Design Award in 2021. In 2022, they established the social design platform Re—gained together with Popma ter Steege architects (PTSA). Re—gained promotes circular design by connecting design expertise with the supply of residual materials and demand for solutions. They achieve this through connecting people, organizing events, and actively participating in material research and product development.

Recently, they also started a project focused on the history of Jessica’s Moluccan family, who came from Sorong to the Netherlands in the 1960s. Their family history differs from a large part of Moluccan families who arrived in the Netherlands in the 1950s. They are currently busy collecting family stories and family recipes, with the goal of creating a book. It will be a richly layered book that incorporates not only stories and recipes but also visual arts and design.

So, in addition to being creative and circular, they have also ventured into the culinary realm. They encompass all three C’s, with “circularity” being a guiding principle in both their approach and projects.
