The world behind Heritage Day
The Friends Lottery Open Monumentendag is organised every year in the second (full) weekend of September by the Netherlands Monument Foundation in cooperation with more than 300 local committees and 18,000 volunteers across the country. The event attracts around 1.3 million visitors every year. During Open Monumentendag, thousands of monuments in the Netherlands are opened to the general public in order to increase public interest in monuments and support for historic preservation. Not only do thousands of monuments open their doors for free, countless activities are organised: exhibitions, guided tours, cycling routes, walks, music performances but also many activities for young people.

The cultural event connects people with monuments and shows that the stories and beauty of monuments enrich our living environment and ourselves. The Friends Lottery Open Monuments Day is made possible by participants from the Friends Lottery, the Restoration Fund, Energie voor Elkaar and the Fund for Cultural Participation.
